Microsoft's own report ties rising emissions to AI and cloud expansion

Microsoft reported that its total emissions were 23.4% above its 2020 baseline in fiscal 2024, citing growth including AI and cloud expansion. Its direct and purchased-energy emissions fell, while supply-chain and other indirect emissions rose; the company also described clean-energy procurement and new cooling designs. These are company-reported totals, not emissions from AI alone. Separately, Berkeley Lab's December 2024 sector study estimated U.S. data centers could use 6.7% to 12% of national electricity by 2028.
